Des Moines police investigate stabbing that killed 19-year-old

Des Moines police are investigating a stabbing attack that left one person dead. Police were called to an apartment in the 900 block of Oakridge Drive just after 10 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a stabbing. A 19-year-old man was found inside an apartment with injuries and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Police say there are no signs of ongoing danger to the community and the stabbing attack occurred after an argument between two people. They have arrested a possible suspect but have not yet charged anyone in the case. Christine Irving of Oakridge Neighborhood, the group that provides safe and affordable housing for dozens of families, said violent crime is not common in the neighborhood. “These are people who are trying to become permanently independent here and they are just working hard,” she said. “This kind of thing just doesn’t happen very often here. Des Moines police are investigating a stabbing attack that left one person dead.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday, police were called to an apartment in the 900 block of Oakridge Drive for a report of a stabbing.

A 19-year-old man was found injured in a residential unit and taken to a hospital in critical condition. The man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Police say there is no evidence of an ongoing threat to the community and the stabbing occurred after an argument between two people. They have arrested a possible suspect but have not yet charged anyone in the case.

Christine Irving of Oakridge Neighborhood, an organization that provides safe and affordable housing to dozens of families, said violent crime is not common in the neighborhood.

“These are people who are trying to achieve permanent self-sufficiency here and they’re just working hard,” she said. “This kind of thing doesn’t happen very often here. It just so happens that it happened in our neighborhood today.”

Des Moines police continue to investigate the incident.
