BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Brownsville police arrested a man on Monday at the Gateway International Bridge for theft of a motor vehicle, police said.

At around 3 a.m., Brownsville Police patrol officers responded to a call from the 2400 block of E. Price Road regarding the theft of a white 2019 Chevrolet Blazer.

The man had broken a window to gain access to the vehicle and drove away without the owner’s consent, police said.

The man was identified as Matthew Sanchez Caballero, 18. He drove the vehicle into Mexico, where he evaded Mexican authorities. He was arrested and taken into Mexican custody.

The Brownsville Police Department’s Auto Theft Unit investigated the theft and obtained a warrant for Caballero’s arrest. He was then arrested at the bridge as he drove back to Brownsville, authorities said.

Caballero was arraigned and bail was set at $20,000.
