Hopkins police find body of missing 4-year-old Waeys Ali Mohamed

Hopkins police said a volunteer searcher found the body of a missing 4-year-old boy in Minnehaha Creek Monday morning.

Police confirmed the missing boy is Waeys Ali Mohamed, who was last seen Sunday morning, police Capt. Craig Kreiling said at a news conference. Mohamed was found in the creek about 1,500 feet downstream from his family’s home at about 10:40 a.m. by a person assisting in the search, Kreiling said.

Although the cause of death has not yet been confirmed, police believe Mohamed drowned, Kreiling said.

“While we believe this was a tragic accident, we will continue our investigation in collaboration with the medical examiner and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office to determine the exact cause of death,” Kreiling said at the press conference.

There were “hundreds” of people searching for Mohamed, and numerous law enforcement agencies assisted in the operation.

“We have not stopped looking for him since we received the first report (on Sunday),” he said.

The captain said the area was difficult to search because of the dense foliage and the high water level and fast current.
