PEOPLE has asked the Chinese Foreign Ministry for comment on the incident but did not receive an immediate response.

According to CNN, police arrested the suspect and identified him as a 55-year-old man surnamed Cui.

“Cui collided with a foreigner while walking in Beishan Park and then stabbed the foreigner and three other foreigners, as well as a Chinese tourist who tried to stop him, with a knife,” Jilin city police said in a social media statement translated by Reuters.

CNN reported that the instructors took part in a partnership program with Beihua University in Jilin, northeast China.

Videos and photos shared on social media showed a woman and two men lying on the ground in the park, with one of the men covered in blood.

Per The New York TimesForeign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the victims were treated in a hospital after the stabbing.

Meanwhile, Iowa State Rep. Adam Zabner confirmed to CNN that his brother, David Zabner, was one of the four instructors attacked.

“I’m just incredibly grateful that my brother is OK and survived the attack,” he said of his brother, who is visiting China for the second time with Cornell. “My family hopes that my brother will come home and get well as soon as possible. And we want to thank the U.S. State Department for all its help, and also our federal delegation from Iowa, who have been especially helpful.”

He added that his brother is “doing well” and “has received stitches and appears to be recovering.”
