Veteran journalists Randy Travis and Beth Galvin take buyouts at WAGA Atlanta

WAGA Atlanta investigative reporter Randy Travis and medical reporter Beth Galvin have accepted buyout offers at the station. Travis joined the station in 1990, when it was a CBS affiliate. Galvin joined in 1996, after his time at Fox.

Travis is 62 years old, according to Atlanta Journal-Constitutionand Galvin is 58 years old.

Before joining WAGA, Travis was a reporter at WMC Memphis, WYFF Greenville and WMAZ Macon. He got his start in media as a sports reporter for his hometown newspaper, the Banner-Herald of Athens.

Travis joined the station’s investigative team in 1994 and won a Peabody Award for an investigation into police officers using a flawed field drug test that led to a bunch of false positives, in 2018. This story was titled “$2 Tests: Bad.” Arrests.

Travis shared on Facebook: “One thing I’ve learned from working 45 years in the news business – 42 years in local TV news – is this: Nothing good ever lasts. There is always an end.

“And the same goes for my career at Fox 5.

“On Tuesday, I accepted a generous offer and retired from the station. I stayed there for almost 35 years. Each of them was not only good. They were great.”

He was diagnosed with diabetes at age 29, but nevertheless completed dozens of marathons.

In 2015, Galvin donated a kidney and reported on his experience for WAGA.

“What a privilege it has been to be able to tell your medical stories over the past 24 years,” she shared on Facebook. “I started at FOX 5 as a general assignment reporter and then gradually moved more and more into medical stories, which really gave me the opportunity to expand my own reporting skills. In 2000, I pursued medicine full-time and have loved it every day since.

She concluded by crediting photojournalist Eli Jordan. “I’m very proud of the stories we covered and I hope you found them helpful and inspired, as I did by the people who shared their stories. What a beautiful and incredible adventure this has been,” Galvin said.

THE Journal-Constitution said Randall Rinehart, the station’s editor for 26 years, also took a buyout.
