ICE arrests 8 suspects with ties to IS in New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia

WASHINGTON – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have arrested eight foreign nationals in the United States in recent days who are suspected of having ties to the terrorist group ISIS, a U.S. official familiar with the investigation confirmed.

The eight people were arrested on immigration charges from New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Each is from Tajikistan and entered the U.S. through the southern border with Mexico, the official said. They remain in U.S. custody.

The official said the initial screening at the border found no derogatory information about the individuals, but the U.S. later received intelligence linking them to ISIS. They are not currently facing terrorism charges.

The ICE arrests were made in coordination with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.

“The individuals arrested are being held in ICE custody awaiting deportation,” the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI said in a joint statement.

“As the FBI and DHS recently described in public and partner bulletins, the United States is in an elevated threat environment. The FBI and DHS will continue to work with our partners around the clock to identify, investigate, and disrupt potential national security threats,” the statement continued.
