Jury selection begins in murder trial of former Houston cop Gerald Goines, who led botched raid on Harding Street

HOUSTON — Jury selection for the murder trial of former Houston police officer Gerald Goines, the man at the center of the botched deadly 2019 raid on Harding Street, will begin at the end of the month.

On April 3, a Harris County grand jury re-indicted Goines on two murder charges in connection with the deadly Harding Street raid, a week after Harris County 482nd District Court Presiding Judge Veronica Nelson attempted to quash the original indictments.

Goines’ defense attorneys argued that the original indictments should be dismissed because prosecutors did not specify which section of the tampering statute Goines was accused of violating. According to them, this omission put Goines at risk of being tried for an offense other than that for which he had been charged.

Judge Nelson then granted the defense’s motion to dismiss the indictment, which was vacated a week later.

In 2019, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office charged Goines with murder after Houston Police Department investigators determined the drug raid that killed homeowners Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas was based on lies and forgery. mandate created by him.

“We’re not going to bring the family back to life, but we’re going to hold the people accountable who should be held accountable,” Ogg said in an interview with KPRC 2 Investigates in 2019.

Goines, who is free on bond, is also charged with theft and four counts of tampering with a government record. His trial is set for September 9.
