According to police, the officer who fired the weapon has been with the police for six years.

AUSTIN, Texas – Bodycam footage released Monday shows the moments before police shot and killed a stabber in North Austin.

On May 27, the Austin Police Department (APD) was called to the San Paloma Apartments for a disturbance. Neighbors said they heard objects being thrown and a woman calling for help.

When APD arrived, a woman led officers to the apartment where the disturbances had occurred. After receiving no response, officers forced entry into the apartment and through a second closed door. There they found 48-year-old Ensel Macalre-Urgelles lying on top of a woman, “actively stabbing her.”

According to APD, Officer Cody Schulz, who has been with the police force for six years, shot Macalre-Urgelles. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, the woman was also taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being stabbed multiple times, according to police. The relationship between the Macalre-Urgelles and the woman is currently unclear. Police said no one else was injured in the incident.

Allison Frazier, who lives above where the shooting occurred, said she believes the disturbance was caused by something else.

“It’s really scary, especially as a student who’s separated from your parents,” Frazier said. “Really scary. We thought it was our cat knocking things over last night, but it wasn’t a cat.”

Schulz remains on leave.
