1 dead in police-involved shooting in Opelika

Opelika police released new details Tuesday about a police-involved shooting on I-85.

According to authorities, a 911 call came in around 2:35 p.m. about a traffic accident on I-85 involving a semi-trailer truck and a car.

When officers arrived, they were confronted by an individual armed with a knife. The incident eventually led to an officer-involved shootout. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

As is customary in cases of this kind, the State Bureau of Investigations is taking over the case.

Once the investigation is complete, the results will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office, who will present the findings to a Lee County Grand Jury.
