Sleeping woman killed as bullets fly through Gastonia home, family says – WSOC TV

GASTONIA, NC — Someone fired dozens of shots into a Gastonia home late Monday night, killing a woman inside.

It happened just before midnight on Morgan Street, not far from Union Road. Channel 9’s Ken Lemon learned that half a dozen children were in the building at the time, but fortunately they were not injured.

The woman’s family and friends said 39-year-old Latasha Cureton had died. Now police are working with her family to find answers.

Lemon caught up with officers who were going door to door several blocks from the shooting scene, hoping to find anyone who might have seen, heard or recorded something helpful.

The family said everyone was shaken for Cureton, who was also a mother. They said she was sleeping in her bed when the shooting started and a bullet entered her bedroom window and killed her.

The bullet hole in the window is one of dozens of bullet holes family members showed Lemon. One shot hit a playpen and another went through a sofa where six children were sitting watching a movie with their grandmother.

Thirteen shots were fired into or through the front door. You can see outside through the holes.

A family friend said there was no safe place in the house when the shooting started.

“Everyone needs to know that there are a lot of children living in that house,” said Keith Rice. “And for someone to shoot so often or even shoot in that house is ridiculous. These people are ungodly.”

Lemon spoke to the grandmother, who was home when the shooting started. She said Cureton was her daughter and her best friend. She said she didn’t know why someone would do such a thing, but she pleaded with the shooter to turn himself in.
