Huntsville Police Department accepts applications for officers

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (WHNT) – The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is accepting applications for the 72nd session of the Huntsville Police Academy, beginning in February 2025.

“Our police department has a long and rich tradition of professional service to the citizens of the City of Huntsville,” said HPD Chief Kirk Giles. “Being a police officer is an extremely rewarding career and there is no better place to serve than the City of Huntsville.”

HPD says it employs over 400 sworn officers who “have diverse backgrounds, training and experience.”

Applicants must meet the following criteria to attend the Huntsville Police Academy:

  • U.S. citizens
  • 20 years old when applying, 21 years old when graduating
  • valid drivers license
  • Graduated with a high school diploma or GED
  • Pass the interview, drug test, medical examination and lie detector test
  • Former military personnel must have been honorably discharged on DD214.
