Greenwood man arrested for arson and burglary of Franklin home

A Greenwood man was arrested on arson and burglary charges after setting fire to a home in Franklin, according to police.

Myjewel E. Gills, 31, was arrested on charges of arson, burglary and disturbing the public safety.

Police were called to the 1800 block of Main Street around noon Tuesday for a reported residential building fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured, said Capt. Justin Stall of the Franklin Police Department.

At the scene, Gills made “excited comments” to police and witnesses responding to the fire about setting the house on fire, Stall said.

Witnesses told police they saw him in the backyard of the residence. Police also said they found his keys on a nightstand in the bedroom, Stall said.

Police are not aware of any obvious connection between Gills and the homeowners, Stall said.

Gill was booked into the Johnson County Jail at about 1:04 p.m. and had been held in a padded cell since Tuesday afternoon, according to jail records.

There is no further danger to the public and the incident is considered closed, Stall said.

The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office will decide on formal charges.
