China said on Tuesday that the attack on American teachers in the northeastern city of Jilin was an “isolated incident” and promised that Beijing would ensure the safety of foreigners in the country.

“The police have preliminarily concluded that this is an isolated case. Further investigations are ongoing,” said Lin Jian, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, adding that the incident had “no impact on the normal development of people-to-people exchanges between China and the United States.”
