A 41-year-old San Juan Capistrano man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murdering his parents after officers discovered the mutilated bodies of the elderly couple, as well as the couple’s dead dog, in their trailer, authorities said Wednesday.

Just after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a domestic violence call near the 32000 block of Alipaz Street in San Juan Mobile Estates, a mobile home park in San Juan Capistrano. Officers discovered a “gruesome scene” inside the home where 79-year-old Antoinette Gerdvil and 77-year-old Ronald Walter Gerdvil and the couple’s dog were found decapitated and their bodies mutilated, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement Wednesday.

The suspect, Joseph Brandon Gerdvil, was seen covered in blood as he chased a maintenance worker in the park before stealing his golf cart. He was caught driving the golf cart on Calle Arroyo near a bike path exit when he was shot multiple times by an officer, the OCSD said.

It was unclear if Gerdvil was armed or what prompted the deputy to shoot. The 41-year-old suspect was later hospitalized in critical but stable condition, officials said. He will be charged with two counts of murder at the Orange County Sheriff’s Jail after his release from the hospital, officials said.

The OCSD did not release a motive for the killings, if one is known, nor did it disclose what type of weapon was used in the killing of the elderly couple and the dog.
