Man arrested after shootout with person near Hopkins & Locust

MILWAUKEE – A man was arrested after an exchange of gunfire with Milwaukee Police detectives Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 9, shortly before 7:30 p.m. near Hopkins & Locust.

According to police, two Milwaukee Police Department detectives were working in a plainclothes unit when they observed a man grab a person and point a gun at his head.

At that moment, police said, officers stopped, got out of their patrol car and ordered the man to lie on the ground, identifying themselves as police officers.

They say the man then pointed his gun at the detectives.

The detectives then fired their weapons before he fled the area.

Police said they did not believe at the time that he had been hit by their gunfire.

On Wednesday, July 10, at approximately 4:15 p.m., officers found and arrested the 28-year-old man near the corner of 37th and Locust Streets.

According to police, the man suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound last night and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The detectives involved in the incident were a 50-year-old man and a 40-year-old man, both with over 10 years of service.

Both detectives will be assigned administrative duties, as is usual in a shooting involving police.
