Yarmouth Park incident leads to arrest, suspect faces assault charges

A South Yarmouth man is charged with forcible rape of a child, child abduction and indecent touching and battery of a child under the age of 14 following an incident Tuesday night at Peter Homer Park in South Yarmouth, according to a news release from Yarmouth police.

Police responded to the park around 8 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a report that a man attempted to sexually assault a five-year-old child, the release said. The release said the man “lured the child behind the park’s restrooms where the attempt occurred. The child’s screams scared the suspect away and he fled the area.”

An extensive search culminated in a vehicle stop on Wednesday evening and the arrest of the suspect, according to the press release. The suspect is expected to be arraigned in Barnstable District Court on Thursday, according to police.
