Man arrested for ‘brutal murder’ of 15-year-old girl in 2004

PHOENIX, AZ — A 37-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the “brutal killing” of 15-year-old Elena Lasswell in 2004.

On July 10, 2004, police were called to a home in the area between 23rd Avenue and Thomas Road where they found Lasswell. Emergency responders attempted to save her life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case stalled until DNA analysis was used in 2012 and Sergio Reyes was identified as a suspect.

Reyes was indicted by a Maricopa Court grand jury in 2014. Reyes was living in Mexico at the time.

According to police, Reyes was tracked down with “extensive assistance” from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Reyes, 37, was arrested and charged 20 years after the murder. He was accused of sexual assault and premeditated murder, among other things.
