Officers from the Tweed Byron Police District arrived at the scene and learned that several people were involved in an altercation in which the 25-year-old was injured.

The police confiscated a weapon at the crime scene.

Frightened witnesses wrote on social media that there was “blood everywhere.”

“Why is there no police presence in this mall? Only 15 minutes ago, youths were verbally abusing a security guard. It’s getting worse and worse and you never see any police,” said one person.

Another resident said her son’s friend provided first aid to the injured person following a “machete attack” at the local Tweed Heads shopping centre.

Someone commented that it was “scary” to go to the shops these days.

“Every day a knife attack, a fight, an axe attack, a car theft… crazy,” the person said.
