13-year-old arrested for fatal stabbing at San Leandro Safeway

(KRON) – A 13-year-old boy was arrested for fatally stabbing a man at a San Leandro Safeway in April, San Leandro police said. The victim was identified by police as Zion Gooden, 18.

The stabbing occurred April 2 at the Safeway on Bancroft Ave. 555. When police arrived, they found Gooden with stab wounds to his arm and chest. He later died in a hospital.

As part of their investigation, the police viewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses at the crime scene.

“It appeared that an argument arose between Gooden and a suspect, a 13-year-old juvenile, over the juvenile’s interaction with one of Gooden’s associates,” SLPD said.

The boy was arrested on May 16 at his school in another city. The SLPD served a search warrant at his home and found additional evidence linking him to the murder.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged the boy, SLPD said. The name of the suspected murderer was not released by police because he is a minor.
