Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez clashes with fans after the match against Uruguay

Liverpool footballer Darwin Núñez was involved in an altercation with spectators after his national team beat Uruguay on Wednesday evening.

The striker was seen physically attacking Colombian fans in the stands after the final whistle of the Copa America semi-final.

According to Uruguayan outlet The PaisThere were riots near the locations where friends and family members of players were staying.

Núñez has not yet commented publicly on the incident.

Television cameras and fans captured images of Núñez climbing the railing and making his way toward the packed stands at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He was then seen confronting Colombian fans while others tried to hold him down.

Other Uruguay players were reportedly involved in the incident.

Uruguay captain José María Giménez said the players were trying to defend their families and described the situation in the crowd as a “disaster,” Reuters reported.

He continued: “There was no police and we had to defend our families. This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don’t know how to drink.”

Núñez was seen hugging his son on the pitch after the altercation.

The South American football association Conmebol said it “strongly condemns any act of violence involving football”.

“There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the pitch,” it continued.

The incident occurred after Uruguay suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the semi-finals, ruling them out of a place in Monday’s Copa America final.

Shortly before the riots broke out, there were clashes between players and coaches on the field after the game.

Núñez started the game in attack for Uruguay, but was unable to convert any of his four shots on goal.

Liverpool signed the striker from Portuguese club Benfica for an initial fee of £64 million in June 2022. He has scored 20 goals in 65 appearances for the club.

BBC News has contacted Núñez’s representative for comment.

Colombia will face Argentina in the final on Monday.
