“It is shocking though – I pride myself on the fact that we live close enough to Watford to walk and close enough to London. And although it is really scary and sad, we still live in a beautiful area.

Resident says he heard screams before “absolute chaos” broke out in Ashlyn Close

A resident of Ashlyn Close in Bushey, where police are investigating the murders of three women, said he heard screams on Tuesday night as the “absolutely traumatic” incident unfolded.

The 46-year-old, who did not want to give his name but works in media, said: “It was between 6.30 and 7pm last night and it literally just sounded like children, like someone screaming and then it got more shrill and I thought, ‘That’s definitely a woman screaming’ and within 15 minutes it was absolute chaos.

“Armed police came running and shouted, ‘Stay in your house’… They denied us access and basically locked us in.”

The resident said several ambulances, helicopters and “at least 16 police cars” quickly arrived on the scene, and armed police went door to door to question residents, requesting doorbell camera footage and telling them to stay in their homes.

The woman said she was upset and stressed to know that a man wanted in connection with the triple murder was still at large, adding: “It’s really, really upsetting to think that this happened so close to home and none of us knew and none of us could help.”

“I think it’s just absolutely traumatic for the family involved, for everyone.

“I think the stressful thing about it is that it happened right at the time when a lot of families like to get together, between 6 and 7 p.m. People were probably cooking for their children and getting them ready for bed. And we were all standing in a narrow little street and had no idea of the trauma and tragic circumstances that other people were going through at that time.”
