An 8-year-old third-grade girl was raped and killed by three sixth-grade students aged 12 and 13 in Pagidyala village in Muchumarri district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The three accused were arrested by police and told investigators that they had thrown her body into an irrigation canal to destroy evidence.

The incident occurred on Sunday and only came to light when the Grade 3 girl went missing and her father filed a report at the local police station, saying she had gone to a park to play and later did not return home. Police questioned local residents but were unable to find them, but a sniffer dog led police to the three boys, police said.

All three underage boys attended the same school as the girl and admitted during interrogation to raping and killing her, police said.

The three boys accompanied her as she played in the park and then took her to a secluded spot near Muchumarri Dam where they took turns raping her. They told police they were afraid the girl might tell her parents the truth and so they murdered her and dumped her body in the canal.

Sub-Inspector of Muchumarri police station said the girl’s body has not been found yet and they are treating the case as missing.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Vijayawada rushed to the accident site to search for the body, while student unions demanded closure of educational institutions from tomorrow and condemned the injustice against the girl.
